Make choices for your dream home that fit you and your family
Designing a home for you and your family. Designing and building your home is an exciting process.
The more time you take to consider all your options at the design stage, the fewer changes you’ll want to make during construction and the happier you’ll be with your new home. With so many decisions to make, some people can get a little stuck. Follow our tips to get you started.
You’ll need a scrapbook or folder divided into sections such as exteriors, living spaces, kitchen, bathroom and bedrooms. Collect brochures and pictures from magazines of everything you like including room layout, storage, lights, tile, staircases, appliances, furniture and floors. Do the same online using the Pinterest website, which will record all the links for you.
Think about how you want to live
The best thing about building your dream home is that you get to make choices to fit you and your family. Consider things like indoor/outdoor flow, sight-lines to children’s play areas and separate spaces for older children.
Future proof by making provision for things like outdoor heating and lighting, and speaker and computer cabling throughout your home. Even if you can’t afford these things yet, you’ll be glad the ground work has been done in the future.
Visit your site
Make sure to visit your site at different times of the day to get a really good feel for it. While practical issues such as access to services and drainage will have a bearing on where your home is positioned, you’ll also want to consider the sun, shadow, wind, surrounding properties and neighbourhood noise.
