Planning your home heating is important for a healthy home
A warm home is important, every New Zealander wants to be warm and comfortable in their home so heating is an important part to think about when designing your home. Having a warm dry home is also beneficial for your health and your families’ health.
Most people use electricity, gas or wood to heat their homes. Newer heating systems are more energy efficient and can reduce your power bills, while simple actions can make your existing heating options more efficient. Some of those actions include, drawing your curtains just before dark, using draft stoppers to keep heat from escaping, if you only have a small heater close the door while heating that room.
Insulating your home reduces the amount of heating you need to keep your home at a comfortable temperature. Good quality insulation helps keep the heat in during the winter months and out during those hot summer months.
The first parts you should make sure you insulate are the ceiling and underfloor, followed by external walls. There are lots of different options for insulating your home and here is a few of them:
- Fibre glass insulation
- Polyester insulation
- Wool and wool blend insulation
- Foil insulation
- Polystyrene insulation (a well known brand is Expol)
If you have a wood burner in your home instead of wasting all that heat by keeping it in one area, why not install a heat transfer system to distribute the warm air throughout the rest of your home. A good place to visit for other home heating tips is the Energywise website.
If you are building a new home or renovating your existing home then heating is definitely one of the most important things to consider.
