About the client
Kirsten first contacted us in February of 2018. She had already purchased her land in Maungaturoto and was planning to build her retirement home there out of the busy city of Auckland. She had a design already in mind making use of the rural views for her dream home, looking out over the rural pastures.
We initially worked with her on some concepts sketches and these helped her clarify her final design with a local architect. Kirsten’s father was a builder by trade, so she had some knowledge and lots of common sense in this area. She knew what she wanted in her home and that it would be disability friendly for her old age, she also wanted to take her time to ensure that her final decisions were exactly right.
The home was designed for easy access with multiple level entries and open plan living. The exterior of the home has a combination of timber weatherboard with vertical shiplap Cedar used in the main entrance around the double French doors, which we think is a great focal point of the home and makes for a stunning entrance. The unusual roof shape, going from single level to the second story stands out as a point of difference for this beautifully designed custom home.
The plan for this build was to construct it in phases, the first stage for was to build it to lockup stage, this was to allow her time to really think about how she would like the inside to be finished and we were more than happy to work this way. We offer flexibility as our client also wanted to be involved in supplying some of her own trades and materials from her extensive research, this also helped our client to save money. Phase One was completed in October 2019.
With the inside yet to be completed some of the features will be recycled Rimu flooring used throughout including the stairs, a feature wall of Cedar to tie in with the exterior, an internal stain glass door of recycled glass of her design. There is also plans to extend her outdoor living space with several decks finished in a lovely hardwood that will tie into her garden area making her dream home complete.
When we first met with Kirsten, we understood her vision of a home that would carry her through to old age, to be able to keep her independence with her personal carers living up stairs. We believe that our communication, attention to detail and quality workmanship has contributed to achieving what our client wanted in her custom designed home.
From the Client
“When deciding on a builder I had heard from a local person that Daniel was particular in his attention to detail with his work, so I knew this was the man for me. I found Fogden Builders overall service absolutely amazing, their service has made me want to build again but only if they are my builders.
Daniels standard of workmanship was beyond perfect, absolutely no complaints but praise. He worked hard to find ways to make my small design decisions happen, he was willing to think outside the square and made my dream happen.
The best thing I liked about working with Fogden Builders was that I could talk through any changes and could trust them for an honest opinion with reasons and explanations, but the decision was still mine. They were good listeners, they confirmed everything in writing and phone calls. Daniel took time to find solutions, so no random rushed decisions because he addressed issues before they became an issue.
I found their communication throughout the project excellent, they were open and honest with clear verbal and written communication, it’s a given I would not hesitate to recommend Fogden Builders to anyone looking for a new home builder.”
